Maui A to Z: Gold

An Island Tradition

The pineapple industry used to be big on Maui and throughout the islands.  Today, pineapple is grown here on a much smaller scale.  Out of the ashes of Maui Land & Pine emerged Maui Gold.  Over the last five years, this pineapple farm has not only survived, but thrived.

Maui Gold is not the variety that you find in your local grocery on the mainland.  This particular kind is only grown on Maui, and it has been created for extra deliciousness.  President of Maui Gold, Darren Strand, has narrowed the focus of this business down to growing a great pineapple.  If you’ve ever had a sample, you know he nailed it.  It’s by far the most delicious pineapple I’ve ever tasted.

If you live on the Valley Isle, it would be hard NOT to eat Maui Gold.  It’s sold at Costco and Safeway and everywhere in-between.  We serve it at every pizza night and every breakfast.  It shows up at every party on the island, and is always a welcome guest.

  1. Bummer. I loooove pineapple, and I was thinking, “Gosh, that’s so ripe and yellow…where can I get one of those?” as I wiped away drool 🙂
