Ulupalakua Ranch
[oo-loo-pah-lah-KOO-ah]
Ulupalakua Ranch has a long and varied history, from plantation to ranch to Maui Wine. Visited by kings, queens, paniolos, and arm stealing vandals, it is never short on stories. If you’re lucky, you may hear about the man buried in whiskey below his beloved sugar mill. Not a bad way to spend eternity!
Maui Wine
The vines of Maui Wine (formerly Ulupalakua Vineyards) are situated on the slopes of Haleakala overlooking Molokini, Kahòolawe, and all of Kihei. I’ve never been to a more picturesque vineyard. Last fall, our family was able to see the vines during a private tour for farmers and chefs on Maui. Our experience was topped off with meat right off the spit from Fat Daddies Smokehouse and, or course, wine tasting.
The folks at Maui Wine outdid themselves with the welcome and the food.
My favorite is their Syrah.
If you happen to be coming home from Hana “the back way”, you’ll drive right by their tasting room located just up the road from the vines. You can enjoy a free sip, or three, of their wines in a tasting room built for royalty.
Great name for a wine ranch. (So glad you also added pronunciation lol) And it worked in perfectly for your ‘U’ post.
Once you get the hang of the linguistics of the Hawaiian language, it’s easy, but until then- so hard to pronounce!
